How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter in NYC

February 12, 20264 min readBy Side By Side Roofing & Siding

NYC winters bring snow, ice, and freezing rain that can wreak havoc on an unprepared roof. Here's how to protect your home before the cold hits.

    1. Schedule a Professional Inspection

Have a licensed roofer check for loose shingles, damaged flashing, and worn sealant. Catching small problems now prevents expensive repairs later.

    2. Clean Your Gutters

Clogged gutters cause ice dams — one of the most damaging winter roof issues. Clear all leaves and debris, and make sure downspouts are directing water away from your foundation.

    3. Check Attic Insulation and Ventilation

Proper insulation keeps heat from escaping through the roof, which prevents ice dams. Adequate ventilation allows moisture to escape, preventing mold and rot.

    4. Trim Overhanging Branches

Heavy snow and ice can cause branches to break and fall on your roof. Trim any branches within 10 feet of your roofline.

    5. Repair or Replace Damaged Flashing

Flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights is a common source of winter leaks. Make sure all flashing is secure and sealed.
